About the Artists.
SARA DELILAH COX
Ceramic Artist / Bowdoinham, Maine
Sara Cox is a potter who creates one of a kind earthenware in the woods of Bowdoinham Maine. She has studied art throughout her life, completing her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College in 1990. She has always had a fascination with making things and realized that through clay she could create something useful and beautiful at the same time. After graduating from college she worked in Portland as a studio potter selling her wares at craft shows as well as exhibiting in galleries. In 1994 she opened up her gallery, Delilah Pottery, where she exhibited her colorful, whimsical and quirky pottery for 8 years. In 2003, Sara decided to move to Bowdoinham Maine to live in a more natural setting. Her studio is nestled among the trees and is surrounded by extensive gardens and wildlife. She currently works with on her wheel with red earthenware clay to create her work . She uses slip and under glazes to decorate her pots and finishes them with a glossy clear glaze. Each piece is hand decorated with bright images of plants, flowers, birds, and patterns that reflect her love of the natural world.

ARTIST STATEMENT
The inspiration for my work comes mostly from nature with it’s natural beauty, color, patterns and texture. Living on the coast of Maine I am drawn to the rocks and sea.
In my landscapes, seascapes and sunsets, I like to create a feeling or a familiar place for the viewer to escape. My current work reflects floral studies in which I add textured details with hand stitches.
I work in several processes first creating my fabrics using textile paints on canvas or cotton incorporating a variety of surface design techniques. I then collage the fabrics together to make a composition that will often start with just a few strips of color. When I am satisfied with the composition I then machine quilt the pieces using free motion stitching which allows me to draw with my sewing machine. I use various colors and types of threads and often add hand stitching or embellish with embroidery floss or metallic threads to add even more detail.
